Study: Limited Social Contact Outside Lockdown Periods

Posted on March 2, 2022

Transmission of respiratory viruses depends in part on the rate of close social contacts in a population. A study published in PLOS Medicine on March 1, 2022 by Amy Gimma and colleagues examined how social contact patterns shifted in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reported contacts decreased by roughly 75% from pre-pandemic levels during the most restrictive UK lockdown. The research also found that people continued to limit contact with others even outside of formal lockdown periods, suggesting behavioral changes that extended beyond government mandates.
